Ingredients

  • Shallots: 2 medium
  • Garlic: 4 cloves
  • Garam masala: 1 tsp
  • Cilantro: 1/2 cup finely chopped (can reduce or leave out)
  • Salt, Pepper: to taste
  • Ground pork: 1 lb
  • Vegetable oil: 1 tbsp + 1/4 cup
  • Harissa paste: 1/3 cup
  • Unsweetened coconut milk: 13.5 oz can
  • White beans: 2 15oz cans
  • Sumac: 1/2 tsp

Notes

  • Can sub white beans for orzo or polenta to serve
  • Can sub ground chicken for pork
  • Can sub coconut oil for vegetable oil
  • Harissa paste is NOT the same as harissa (usually a sauce made from a paste)

Instructions

  1. Finely chop shallots and garlic. Combine garam masala, half of shallots, half of garlic, cilantro, and 1 tsp kosher salt in a large bowl; season with pepper. Add pork (or chicken) and mix gently until just combined
  2. Divide meat mixture into 12 equal pieces and roll into balls
  3. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook meatballs, turning occasionally, until browned in spots (5-8 minutes). Transfer to plate
  4. Reduce heat to medium. Cook remaining shallots and garlic in skillet until softened, about 4 minutes. Stir in harissa paste, coconut milk, and 1 tsp kosher salt. Season with pepper, Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook until slightly thickened, about 6-8 minutes
  5. Nestle meatballs into sauce; cover and cook 10 minutes. Turn meatballs over and cook, uncovered, occasionally spooning sauce over, until sauce is about the consistency of marinara, about 8-10 minutes
  6. While meatballs are cooking, heat remaining 1/4 cup oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add beans and 1/2 tsp sumac; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring and mashing beans; add up to 1/4 cup of water a little at a time to loosen if needed. Cook until heated through and almost completely mashed, about 5 minutes
  7. Divide beans among plates and top with meatballs and sauce. Sprinkle with sumac to serve
